Comparison information provided using publicly available information as of 3/5/24 for the purpose of summarizing program features, not a specific plan. 9 Reasons to Consider Spot Plans Above Trupanion Plans

1. Trupanion Has Longer Waiting Periods Than Spot.

Pets enrolled in a Spot plan are eligible for next-day coverage for accidents, with a standard 14-day waiting period for illnesses. Trupanion has a 5-day waiting period for accidents and a 30-day waiting period for illnesses — more than double Spot's illness wait.

2. Trupanion Doesn't Cover Exam Fees. Spot Does.

Spot plans help cover the cost of veterinary exam fees as part of a covered accident or illness claim. Trupanion does not cover the examination fee for accidents, illnesses, or any visit — this exclusion applies to every claim, not just the first.

3. Trupanion Doesn't Offer a Preventive Care Add-On. Spot Does.

Spot Pet Insurance helps support preventative care with optional wellness riders available as an add-on to an Accident and Illness plan. These riders can help cover wellness exams, vaccines, dental cleanings, flea/heartworm prevention, and more. Trupanion does not offer a preventive or wellness care option, standard or as an add-on.

4. Spot Uses an Annual Deductible. Trupanion Uses a Lifetime, Per-Condition Deductible.

Spot's deductible resets each policy year, giving you a more predictable cost across all conditions. Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible: once met for a specific condition, that condition is covered without paying the deductible again for it — but a new deductible applies each time a new, unrelated condition arises.

5. Trupanion Doesn't Offer an Accident-Only Plan. Spot Does.

Spot Pet Insurance offers pet parents both Accident-Only and Accident and Illness plan options, so they can choose the plan that best fits the needs of their pet. Trupanion only offers Accident and Illness plans.

6. Trupanion Only Offers One Annual Limit Option. Spot Lets You Choose.

Spot Pet Insurance offers pet parents multiple annual limit options for Accident and Illness plans; pet parents can choose between a plan with a $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited annual limit. Trupanion only offers an unlimited annual limit option for their plans.

7. Trupanion Only Covers Behavioral Issues and Alternative Therapies as a Paid Add-On. Spot Includes Them Standard.

Spot Pet Insurance's accident and illness plans can help cover up to $1,000 per year for eligible alternative therapies, including behavioral conditions — included in our base plans. Trupanion does not include coverage for behavioral issues or alternative therapies in its base plan, but the coverage can be added for an additional cost.

8. Trupanion Doesn't Offer a Multi-Pet Discount. Spot Does.

At Spot Pet Insurance, our goal is to help pet parents get their pets the care they need. We offer a 5% multi-pet discount on both pets when 2 pets are enrolled, and a 10% multi-pet discount on all pets when 3 or more pets are enrolled. Trupanion does not offer multi-pet discounts.

9. Trupanion Charges a $35 Admin Fee. Spot Doesn't.

When enrolling in a Trupanion plan, pet parents are charged a $35 admin fee at the time of enrollment. Spot Pet Insurance never charges pet parents a one-time admin fee at enrollment.
