Great Danes have historically held the record for the largest dog breeds in the world, holding the Guinness World Record from 2010 to 2013, 2016, and 2021 they are formally recognized by the American Kennel Club as the largest dog breed. These beloved giants can reach almost three feet tall at their shoulders when standing on all fours and are taller than the majority of human adults when they stand on their hind legs! In fact, the tallest dog to date was a Great Dane named Zeus who stood at a whopping 44 inches tall. In comparison to their massive heights, Great Danes are not extremely heavy, weighing between 110 and 175 pounds. Despite their huge size, Great Danes are friendly, healthy, loyal and make exceptional companions for their owners.
Irish Wolfhound
Irish Wolfhounds tend to be a close second to Great Danes in the World Record books. Originally bred to hunt down wolves, these dogs are extremely intelligent and are usually very high-energy. They are also known to be easygoing and wonderful with children. Although Great Danes are generally larger in size, Irish Wolfhounds are known to be taller, standing around 35 inches tall on average – equivalent to the height of a donkey!
Saint Bernard
Bred to be a rescue dog in the Swiss Alps, Saint Bernards are now one of the best breed choices for a family home. They are extremely kind, docile and still commonly used as search and rescue assistants across the world. Saint Bernards typically stand at a maximum of 30 inches but can weigh up to a massive 180 pounds! Another super fluffy breed, Leonbergers were originally bred to be members of the royal families. They are a cross of Saint Bernards and Newfoundlands.
