The medium-sized muscular dog with a large head, flat face and skin that folds around the face and shoulders – the English Bulldog comes from the Old English Bulldog that was used for bull-baiting. It is a cruel sport that has since been banned under the Cruelty to Animals Act in England. The old breed is not extinct. However, we’ve now got a softer, more companion-like version of the breed in the form of the English Bulldog, also known as the British Bulldog. (1)
These dogs are the first ones in the lineage of the modern Bulldogs. After them, came the French and the American version. Hence, they are the default Bulldog when someone doesn’t specify which Bulldog they are talking about.
They are kind and courageous and get along very well with children and other dogs. They are also very loyal. They can be very stubborn, though. The biggest issue that you’ll be facing with them, however, is not their stubbornness, but their loud snores. They are infamous for that. The second biggest issue that you will probably face is their chewing habits. They have a very strong jaw and would need plenty of chewing toys to keep them away from your furniture.
There’s another thing that Bulldogs are quite infamous for – their health.
Because of their flat face, they can face a lot of health challenges, and can develop several health conditions in their lifetime. While some of them are minor, others can be very severe and may also need surgery. They include – (2)
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
This is caused by their flat faces and short muzzles that lead to breathing problems, panting, chronic discomfort, difficulty eating, etc. Almost every Bulldog has this condition to some degree.
Skin Problems
The folds that make this breed stand apart, can be the reason for a number of skin conditions. Some of them are eczema, or “canine atopic dermatitis,” bacterial infections like staph and pyoderma, acute moist dermatitis, etc.
Bone problems
Bulldogs have a structural defect called chondrodysplasia which is an abnormal growth in cartilage. This increases the dog’s likelihood of having bone problems. They include conditions like hip dysplasia, ligament injuries, arthritis, etc.
Eye Problems
A condition called ‘cherry eye’ is commonly seen in English Bulldogs. Their shallow eye pockets also become a place for dust and debris to settle. Some Bulldogs also get affected by a condition called ‘dry eye’, which is the inability to produce tears. It can lead to other major problems.
Apart from these, Bulldogs are also prone to other conditions like allergies, thyroid disease, heart disease, cancer, etc.
We know you’re thinking that we are talking about everything but the cost of insurance for these dogs. This is because it is important to know these details about the breed as the insurance cost is dependent on factors like the general health condition of the breed, temperament, lifestyle, age, location, etc.
Now that you’ve kept the patience of staying with us till here and understanding the breed in depth, we won’t make you wait any more. Here are the answers you were looking for -
