What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Pet insurance can put money back in your pocket for veterinary costs needed to diagnose, treat, and manage an eligible condition. Exams and rechecks, x-rays, ultra-sounds, bloodwork, surgeries, stitches, medication, and prescriptions, and even prescription diets are all examples of costs that can be claimed for if they are used to treat or diagnose a covered condition.

What is the Deductible in Pet Insurance?

Just like most other insurances, deductibles within pet insurance refer to the predetermined amount that policyholders must pay before the insurance coverage kicks in. It is an important aspect of pet insurance plans and plays a significant role in managing costs for both the pet owner and the insurance provider. You can learn more about insurance deductibles here.

How are my pet insurance premiums calculated?

In general, your monthly premium is based on your pet’s age, breed, and your location, as well as your plan configuration. Spot allows pet parents to choose a deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit from a variety of options, each which play into the cost of your monthly premium. Opting into a preventive care add-on or eligibility for a discount can also affect the price of your premium.

Does Pet Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

Generally, pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is any illness or injury your pet experienced before your coverage began including during the 14-day waiting period after enrollment. This means any treatment or medication related to that condition will not be reimbursed by your insurance.

However, there are a few exceptions. Spot can offer coverage for curable and cured pre-existing conditions if your pet has been symptom-free and treatment-free for a period of 180 days. This does not apply to knee and ligament conditions. Additionally, Spot’s accident and illness plan can help cover eligible hereditary and congenital conditions, which are genetic or present at birth, even if they manifest later in life.

It's crucial to carefully read your pet insurance policy before enrolling to understand which conditions or injuries can be covered under your plan. If your pet has a pre-existing condition, it's still wise to consider insurance as it can help cover future, unrelated illnesses and injuries. If you have any questions about your coverage, please reach out to our customer service team at 800-905-1595.
